The History of Washers
Do you know your history?
Learn how this popular American backyard washers game got started.

Where in the world did the game of Washers start?
A story is told over the years that the washers game supposedly started in the Texas
oil fields as a way to pass time. They originally played the game with over sized steel
washers and used a whole dug into the ground. From there several different variations
of this all time classic game have developed.
Depending on who you ask and even where one lives, you will get different answers
to the origins of the game and how it should be played. Rumor has it that there is proof
that the Egyptians and Mayan were playing a version of the washers game in the
heyday of their empires.
Nobody really knows for sure how or when washers all came about, but our guess is that it
came from the need for entertainment, regardless of what material you had to work with at the time.
Several different names have also came about for this game, I am sure you have heard of
some of them. Washers, Texas Horseshoes, Washer Toss Game, Hillbilly Horseshoes and
portable washers are just some of the many names for the washer game which has become
an American favorite backyard game. Whatever you like to call it, it is an exciting and fun way to pass time!
Whatever the history, whatever the original materials used or not used, once you do try this
game you will be forever a "Washers Player" at heart and have a passion to be the
best player on the block.
